(but on some other ridiculously inferior device which plays music)
In the spirit of other iPod-owning bloggers (bastards!), here is a taste of what’s rockin’ over at Le Virtual Chez Ausculture.
Pete Doherty - Darling Clementine
Cyndi Lauper - Hey Now (Girls Just Wanna Have Fun)
Keane - Walnut Tree
The Arcade Fire - Crown Of Love
Jimmy Buffet - If You Like Pina Coladas
Dolly Parton & Ladysmith Black Mambazo - Peace Train
Razorlight - Golden Touch
Ben Kweller - On My Way
Rufus Wainwright - California
Gang Awry - This Autumn
Jeff Buckley - The Sky Is A Landfill
Morrissey - Moon River
Stephen Malkmus - Troubbble
Simon & Garfunkel - The Only Living Boy In New York
Drive-By Truckers - Never Gonna Change
Catatonia & Space - The Ballad Of Tom Jones
Tweet feat. Missy Elliott - Oops Oh My
Not From There - Frisco Disco
Custard - Piece Of Shit
Gus Gus - Polyesterday
I thoroughly recommend anything on the above list. Except possibly the Jimmy Buffett rendition of If You Like Pina Coladas, though I am rather in love with the chorus and am contemplating covering it for my own personal musical challenge.
Now - the big question is, what’s rockin’ on Patrick’s music listening device of choice? He’s a big fan of a wide variety of music, from Beth Gibbon to Stefan Dennis Bungo Jungo Wayans, with a dollop of Tuvan chant to boot. ‘Fess up, Patrick.
And feel free to contribute your own “Recently Listen To On Some Sort Of Music Device Which May Or May Not Be An iPod Depending On Finances” list below. As I’ve said a zillion times before, I dig hearing about different bands out there - it was thanks to Darp that I first learnt of The Arcade Fire, and I’m trying to get my paws on some Wolfmother after hearing some passionate words of praise from funky sexbombs.
OH - and if you hear anything you think I might like, I would love - nay, treasure you forever - if you gave me a heads up, either through the gift of mp3 or simply a namecheck. If you prefer the idea of the former, I recommend sending it via You Send It to jess@ausculture.com.
Posted by Jess at January 6, 2005 10:22 PMWhat eerie timing, as I am currently naked dancing in another bloggers kitchen and making a mix…tape. Yes tape. They can stick their iPods, and seeing as though they’re so sompact and sexy and cool…they’ll probably fit anywhere they choose to stick them. Anyhoo…the tape!

ooh, that formatted weird but i’m naked and hungry now so i’ll have to live with it. Sorry!

Fucking hell.
You’ve just named at least five of my favourite songs ever in that list, including the Rodriguez original of Sugar Man.
Did you not laugh when you saw the photo of Rodriguez on the cover of the album it’s off though? I did. Is that wrong?
I shall format it appropriately sexily. I would recommend (for anyone else reading this and wanting to post a list) using html in the comments.
New line = (without the spaces) Bold = Italics =
Hopefully that helps!

Fucking fuck fuck.
The irony of my post giving advice on formatting being buggered up format-wise!
(B) for bold (end it with (/b) ) (i) for italics (end it with (/i) ) (br) for new line
And replace ( with < where necessary.

Ha!
Well, I have just put a copy of Atomic Bomb on my work computer which I will listen to this afternoon. I had a brief run through on the weekend and quite liked it which ought to make you happy EXCEPT…
… and I am quite unpopular with Housemate Steve for saying this btw …
I FUCKING HATE VERTIGO!

I didn’t mean to hurt you, I didn’t mean to make you cry!
But it really just doesn’t do anything for me, and hearing people talk of it as though it were the world’s greatest song probably makes me dislike it more than is necessary. It feels like Bono is imitating Bono.
OF COURSE that said, my opinion could be unduly influenced by Housemate Poinaa’s tendency to enter every room shouting “HOLA!” for the past month and a half. Leave it with me, I’m quite enjoying the rest of it :)

Interesting comment. Just after hearing the album for the first time, I made the observation to a friend that whilst there are bands like Jet who are derivative of the Rolling Stones and Oasis derivative of The Beetles, U2 have managed, somehow, to become derivative of U2.
But it works, and Bono’s voice, sheesh, it swaggers about like it owns the town. I could never get sick of his voice.

I worked out what I hate about it - it’s the “Hello, hello - blah blah somethingorother vertigo!”. Just irks me for some reason. I quite like the verses and everything else!
Hmmm…. Not sure if I agree that Bono’s voice sounds overly comfortable or confident on this album but leave it with me since my opinions tend to change like the weather.
PS: Anyone else going to Frente on the 21st?

Well, I’m not wealthy enough to have an iPod or anything so spiffy so I’ll just list the next 20 songs that come up when I put my full iTunes library on random, shall I?
Crazy. Total insanity. Great site BTW, I should’ve been reading it for a long time. Oh, and if you like Jess McAvoy, you’ll probably like Sarah Blasko. Jess’ album is great if you haven’t heard the whole thing, I’m just about to re-review it for part of my site’s 1st birthday celebration.

I wholeheartedly second Tony P’s recommendation of Carla Werner. She makes me weak in the knees. Her voice and live performance is divine. I’ve written about her on the blog before.
I would post direct links but your comments system just buggers them up. It strips the html if i try and do a proper link. And it removes the underscores _ from the URL if i paste that directly. Poo.

It’s not my fault, Boud, I promise!
:(
But yes, I am very much enjoying what I’ve heard of Carla Werner - I think I might have to catch her live next time she plays in Sydney. Does she play often?

I think she may have dissapeared for a while to record a new album.
I met her a while ago when she played at The Hopetoun, here’s a pic: http://www.boudist.com/images/carla.jpg
I also have a poster of hers that she signed for my birthday: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dreadfuldan/667627/
I also met her backstage at The Gaelic Club with Damien Rice: http://boudist.com/images/carla-damien.jpg
I am such a sad sack fan boy.

Carla Werner
Before Chanel Cole, another sexy female New Zealand born singer extraordinaire burst onto the music scene in Sydney. When I say burst, I mean about 50 people in Sydney, tops, realised Carla Werner was THE female Jeff Buckley and became fans, nay, disciples, and concluded the rest of the world was plainly fucked up in the head for not noticing. Starting out at Manly playing in front of cafes, and then a few times at the Hopetoun she became frustrated with the Australian music industry, she left to go to the US, played an impromptu gig for the president of Columbia/Sony, and was signed up on the spot. Paul Oakenfold heard her miracle-voice-from-heaven and used her for his single ‘Southern Sun’. She toured with the Jayhawks in the US for a while and came back to Sydney in early 04 where she completely blew away the same 50 people she did last time she was in Sydney, 4 years prior. 100 times better live than on cd. Her voice is so powerful live, she often doesn’t use the microphone, and still her voice fills up the room. It’s unfortunate that this aspect didn’t come through so much in the cd.
Jess, I’ve sent you 3 songs off her latest album, Departure (2004). They are “Under”, “Like Mercury”, and “Iodine Red”. There are 30 second soundbites of each of her songs at the link below.

Hope you like.
Cheers dollface, am downloading them now and will let you know what I think - You Send It works well, doncha reckon?
PS: While not essential, folks, I did love that Tony P gave me a sort of bio about the artist he was recommending. Feel free to tell me anything you think I should know before listening!
PPS: That last PS isn’t actually sarcastic, I am being 110% sincere despite how it sounds.
Well, I’ve been listening and I am quite impressed - that “Like Mercury” song is absolutely heavenly xxx
